Understanding Lateral Wall Resection of the Ear
If your furry friend has been dealing with frequent ear infections, you know how uncomfortable and frustrating it can be for them—and for you! One...
When Gidget, a little dachshund with a big personality, suddenly started sneezing uncontrollably, her family knew they needed expert help. What unfolded was a mystery that led to an intricate procedure and, ultimately, relief for Gidget.
Gidget’s sneezing was not your average, run-of-the-mill sneeze. It was persistent and seemed to cause her quite a bit of discomfort. Sneezing in dogs can be triggered by a variety of reasons – from the benign, like a bit of dust, to the more concerning, such as infections or foreign objects lodged where they shouldn’t be. In Gidget's case, the relentless nature of her symptoms prompted us to look deeper.
Given the nature of Gidget's symptoms, we recommended a procedure known as rhinoscopy. This specialised procedure involves the use of a fine, intricate camera that is carefully manoeuvred deep into the nose to explore for any abnormalities. The unique structure of a dog’s nose, filled with fine scrolls of bones called turbinates, makes this a delicate task. Imagining the nose's interior like the scrolls of chocolate in a Cadbury’s Twirl bar helps visualise the complexity of navigating this sensitive area!
Rhinoscopy requires specialised equipment and significant skill to perform accurately. The camera must be guided with precision to avoid irritating the delicate turbinates while thoroughly exploring every nook and cranny for potential culprits causing discomfort.
Fortunately, Dr. Vicky is no stranger to endoscopy and was scheduled to go exploring up Gidget’s nose.
The suspense finally crescendoed to an astounding conclusion when she successfully retrieved a grass seed that had been the source of all the trouble! It’s astonishing how something so small and seemingly innocuous can cause such discomfort and distress.
The relief was immediate. Gidget went home comfortable, her sneezing mystery solved!
Gidget's story is a nudge for all of us pet parents about the unexpected turns our pet's health can take.
