“Really? You think he’s overweight?’
As a veterinarian, this is pretty common feedback for me to hear during a consultation. My role is to assess your pet’s health, give a voice to any concerns we can discuss, understand how they affect their wellbeing, and make a plan to get it sorted.
With over 40% of Australian dogs carrying additional weight, you can imagine this is a frequent topic in the exam room.
What you might not realise is how many families are unaware that their dog is overweight, and the impact this has on both their quality AND quantity of life.
Carrying extra weight puts immense, unnecessary strain on our pet’s little bodies. A landmark 14-year Lifetime Study demonstrated that keeping dogs at a healthy weight extended their lifespan by up to 1.8 years!
That’s nearly two whole extra years of walks, cuddles, and Saturday sleep-ins! Even better, lean dogs showed a delayed onset of chronic, age-related diseases like osteoarthritis compared to their heavier littermates. It’s why we say weight management really is medicine.

It is really difficult for families to assess their pet’s weight.
So you have a Labrador. Are they male or female? Desexed, or entire? Australian or Canadian heritage?
These questions matter when it comes to expected adult weight and cause huge variability in what is expected for this breed. Let alone when we start mixing breeds, or have no idea what breed our dog might be!
When I was a graduate, I learned a great trick that I still use every single day to help me figure out whether a dog is carrying too many kilos. What I love about this trick is that it's easy, and I can teach anyone to do it in under 5 minutes.
Next, step back and look at their shape from above and from the side. You want to see a clear, tapered waist when looking down from the top, and a crisp "tummy tuck" sloping upwards from the side.
Keep in mind: Certain breeds make visual checks tricky! Dense, fluffy coats on our doodles easily disguise a disappearing waistline, whilst the naturally stocky build of our bullies can make them look heavy when they are just compact. When in doubt, let your hands do the talking.
If you're struggling to find that waistline beneath all the fur, don't worry! Come and see us, and we’ll work together on a tailored plan to keep your companion thriving for years to come.
