What is your cat doing right now? Mine is sleeping. It’s bitterly cold outside, and she’s curled up on her heated blanket, and I swear she’s smiling.
What’s her blood pressure up to? Is it raging? How would you know? High blood pressure in cats (feline hypertension) is quite a common but completely hidden disease in cats…. Until it isn’t.
The tricky thing about feline high blood pressure is simple: you don't know you have a problem until you really have a problem. It’s a silent thief.
Uncontrolled hypertension slowly damages fragile blood vessels throughout the body, quietly targeting organs that rely on a delicate blood supply.
Left unchecked, elevated pressure can suddenly lead to devastating crises—including sudden blindness from retinal detachment, strokes, and kidney disease.

You might wonder why we can't just wrap a standard human arm cuff around your cat’s leg and press start.
Short answer: It doesn't work.
Automated machines are notoriously inaccurate in cats because their arteries are so tiny. Instead, we use a particular piece of equipment called a Doppler.
We place a tiny, ultra-sensitive ultrasound probe over an artery in their paw or tail, allowing us to physically listen to the blood flow.
Admittedly, it can be a fiddly little test! It requires a calm consult room, a gentle touch, and patience. A Churu goes a long way, too!
Sometimes it takes a bit of practice for your cat to get used to sitting still and listening to the soft whoosh-whoosh sound of the machine. But it is entirely non-painful, and the protective health insights it gives your pet family? Priceless.

Preventative care is always the best medicine.
If your feline companion is entering their golden years and hasn't had their numbers checked recently, this is one quick check that could protect so much.
Come and see us at Vetland Hospital & Emergency, and let us take a calm moment in the consult room to check their blood pressure and help keep your best friend thriving.

“Really? You think he’s overweight?’
If you’ve got a pet with itchy skin, I know you get it. There is nothing quite as heartbreaking and demoralising as watching your pet frantically...
