No More Twists and Turns: Laser Surgery Gives Dex A Fresh Start!

No More Twists and Turns: Laser Surgery Gives Dex A Fresh Start!

Dex has been part of the VetLand family for years. He’s a lovable, cheeky bulldog with a personality that is larger than life—and easily a VetLand favorite!

To see Dex not himself, and insatiably uncomfortable was absolutely crushing. His seemingly adorable little corkscrew tail was causing him big problems. Dex was uncomfortable, scooting along the floor to itch as best he could, and getting very frustrated with it all.

His most amazing family could see how uncomfortable Dex was, and were immediately on board to keep him the relief he deserves.

Dr. Vicky and Dr. Miranda perform precise CO₂ laser caudectomy surgery to relieve Dex’s painful screw tail condition.

What Is a Screw Tail?

A screw tail is the name given to a deformity which is common in English and French Bulldogs. Instead of a normal tail, they have a tightly curled, malformed stump.

It twists into the body, creating deep folds. These folds trap dead skin and oils, and are a haven for bacteria and yeast. This leads to constant infections which are insatiably itchy. The discomfort becomes unbearable.

A Permanent Solution to Dex’s Curly Problem

First up, Dex started a nutritional overhaul to ensure he was in the safest condition for surgery, and improve his prognosis for recovery. Ina. Spectacular effort, Dex’s family were able to get him 8kg slimmer - and ready for life changing surgery!

Dex was scheduled for a screw-tail caudectomy procedure to amputate his tail stump and remove the skin folds. This is a delicate procedure, as it is performed close to the spinal cord and anus, demanding surgical precision.

For Dex, surgery was performed with a carbon dioxide laser, instead of a steel scalpel. CO2 laser eliminates bleeding and is less traumatic than cutting tissue with a scalpel, this means Dex recovers quicker and with less pain.

The procedure was performed by our surgeons Dr. Vicky and Dr. Miranda. Together, they successfully removed Dex’s malformed tail.

The procedure was performed under general anaesthesia, with the aid of an epidural local anaesthesia so that Dex awakens with his surgery site feeling numb, and comfortable.

A New Lease on Life with his Family

Dex came through surgery beautifully. We followed surgery with post-operative laser therapy to help his body heal even faster. Laser reduces inflammation and boosts post-surgical tissue recovery.

Today, Dex is back to his happy, cheeky self. His mum, Stacey, couldn’t be more grateful. She surprised our team with flowers and chocolates—proof of just how life-changing this surgery was.

Now, Dex is thriving, soaking up the sun, and living life in complete comfort.
Moments like these remind us why we do what we do.

Dex enjoys splashing in the water post-recovery, happy and pain-free after his successful tail surgery.
