Freddie’s Story: From Sore Eyes to a Happy Life

Freddie’s Story: From Sore Eyes to a Happy Life

Dog Allergies What Happened to Freddie?

Freddie is very suspicious of visits to the vet hospital, but in the end had no choice to face her fears as she was suffering with severe eye soreness, facial swelling, and significant skin irritation. Freddie wasn’t too fond of new environments, but even from a distance, it was clear she was struggling. We arranged an assisted admission to settle her nerves - Freddie’s family comforted her whilst she received a sedative and drifted off to sleep in her family's arms. Under comfortable sedation, we could see what was bothering Freddie.

Dog Ear Infection A Closer Look Reveals More

Dr. Vicky took the opportunity to perform a full physical examination for Freddy. A plan was made to address her severe allergies and eye condition, however it was also discovered that Freddie's ear canals had closed over—a common issue in Shar Peis. This had led to an impaction of wax and debris With the ear hole completely closed, it would be impossible for her family to administer any medications or rinses to help clear Freddie’s ears.

Dog Ear Pain Developing a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

Brave girl Freddie faced a series of treatments to address her multiple issues. Using no-scalpel surgical techniques with the CO2 laser we changed the shape of her eyelids so they no longer rubbed on the surface of her eyes. This gave her immediate relief.

To address her severe narrowing of her ear canal, Dr. Vicky altered the shape of the ear canal by removing the outer wall, thereby improving ventilation and allowing an exit point for normal wax and debris. This procedure is called a lateral wall resection of the ear and you can read more about it here.

Freddie's Remarkable Recovery

Freddie’s recovery was nothing short of amazing. Within two weeks, she was able to have her protective cone removed. Her skin transformed and was now glowing, her eyes were wide open and comfortable, and her ears were open, allowing her to hear her surroundings properly for the first time. We are just so excited that these successful treatments significantly improved Freddie’s quality of life, allowing her to enjoy life to its fullest.
