Understanding Lateral Wall Resection of the Ear
If your furry friend has been dealing with frequent ear infections, you know how uncomfortable and frustrating it can be for them—and for you! One...
When it comes to our pet’s health, things have certainly changed since I was taking my dogs to the vet. The medical miracles at the cusp of reality for our pets is revolutionary – with dialysis, heart valve transplants and prosthetic limbs all on the horizon of veterinary medicine.
But does it all have to be stem cells and super science? Absolutely not! There is magic locked away in the most humble of beginnings – food!
In the veterinary world, we are very much using nutrition to treat illness and disease, just as critically as we would use medications. And we’ve been doing this with great success for a long long time.
There are certain carbohydrates, oils or proteins we may seek out to help particular conditions, but here are my top superfoods for dogs and cats!
Omega oils are royalty when it comes to nutritional supplements. Time and time again they have been shown to compete with medications when it comes to their anti-inflammatory benefits. This means they’re great for dogs and cats suffering any kind of inflammation, but especially arthritis and skin allergies.
Egg is another great, natural anti-inflammatory that I especially love for dog’s suffering from allergic skin disease. The vitamin D helps to reduce the intensity of their dermatitis, and can even reduce their reliance on medications! Be careful not to go crazy with the egg – although it’s packed with good fats, fat is still fat! This means that feeding a whole egg every day can not only blow out your dog’s waist line but also put them at risk of nasty pancreatitis. Always introduce new foods slowly, and remember small portions – even your labrador is only small compared to you!
Blueberries are absolutely packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants are what protects your cells from wear and tear type damage, and can even reduce the risk of developing cancer! A bonus? Many dogs find blueberries quite tasty.
Ok, so carrots are packed with vitamin A – this is what makes them orange – and that’s great for a whole number of reasons. But I actually love carrots here for dog’s as a great higher fibre, low calorie dental chew! Given enough encouragement, lots of dogs can get very excited for the humble carrot and this can be a great, inexpensive daily dental treat
When it comes to our pets, choosing the right foods can even help to reduce their reliance on medications! Now that’s nothing to be sniffed at! There are so many other pet superfoods – some which pack the punch they promise – others which can’t match the hype.
Are there any foods you’re wondering about? Let us know – we’re always looking to bring you the best original content!
