Think You Know Pet Health? These 5 Myths Might Surprise You!

Pet health is full of well-intentioned advice, but not all of it is accurate. Some pet health myths can even be harmful if followed!

Let’s debunk some of the most widespread misconceptions and set the record straight for responsible pet care.

Myth 1: A Dry Nose Means Your Dog Is Sick

Fact: Many pet parents panic when they notice their dog’s nose is dry, assuming it’s a sign of illness. But the truth is, a dog’s nose can be wet or dry depending on various factors like the weather, hydration, or even sleep.

A wet nose can help with scent detection, but it’s not an indicator of health. Likewise, a dry nose doesn’t automatically mean your dog is unwell.

If your pet is eating, playing, and behaving normally, there’s no need to worry. However, if the dryness is accompanied by cracking, bleeding, loss of colour on the nose, lethargy, or ulcers of the nose, it’s time to see the vet.

Myth 2: Cats Always Land on Their Feet Safely

Fact: Cats have an impressive ability to right themselves mid-air, thanks to their flexible spine and a well-developed “righting reflex.” However, this doesn’t mean they are immune to injury from falls.

In fact, high-rise syndrome is a serious risk for cats, leading to fractures, head trauma, and internal injuries. Severe cases may involve ruptured bladders and internal bleeding, sometimes requiring emergency surgery.

Even shortfalls can be dangerous. To prevent accidents, secure windows, and balconies, and provide safe climbing spaces indoors, cat netting is an excellent solution in these situations.

Myth 3: Baby Shampoo is Safe for Puppies

Fact: Human shampoos, including mild baby shampoos, are not suitable for dogs. Pets have a different pH balance, and using human products can strip their skin of essential oils, causing dryness, irritation, and itchiness. Even baby shampoo, which is gentle on human babies, is just not appropriate for pups.

Instead, always choose a vet-recommended, non-soap, oatmeal based puppy shampoo especially formulated for their skin. Using the wrong shampoo, or even household detergents like wool wash, can disrupt their skin barrier and lead to discomfort or infections.

Myth 4: Pets Don’t Need Dental Care

Fact: Dental health is just as vital for pets as it is for humans. By age three, 80% of dogs show signs of disease.

Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream, increasing inflammation and health risks. Plaque buildup may cause infections, gum disease, and organ damage.

Regular brushing, dental chews, and professional cleanings are essential to maintaining your pet’s oral health and preventing complications down the track.

Myth 5: Dogs Eat Grass Only When They’re Sick

Fact: While some dogs might eat grass to induce vomiting, many do it simply because they enjoy the texture or taste. Others might be seeking extra fibre in their diet.

One case study reported a dog that regularly ate grass and vomited but stopped once switched to a high-fibre diet. This suggests that some dogs may seek out grass due to dietary deficiencies.

Unless your dog is vomiting frequently after eating grass, it’s usually nothing to worry about. However, always ensure they aren’t exposed to chemically treated lawns that could be harmful.
